10. Love Me Tender (1956)
This Western witnesses Elvis’ first foray onto the silver screen. Whilst not playing the lead role Elvis’ screen presence steals the film.
A western tale of civil war and family feuds. Elvis manages to showcase his raw natural talent and many critics responded positively to this new breed of movie star and the teenage audiences loved it. The film grossed 1 million in its first week. All agreed Elvis Presley was a screen actor to be taken seriously. Is this one of your favourite Elvis movies?
Lastly, the film included the stand-out title track Love Me Tender alongside some country-tinged numbers Poor Me and We're Gonna Move.
9. Elvis on Tour (1972)
This was the final instalment of 33 Elvis movies that the King had produced since his debut back in 1956. Elvis on Tour became the only Elvis film to win an award. It shared the top spot at the Golden Globes Awards with Walls of Fire for Best Documentary of The Year. One of the first fly-on-the-wall style documentaries the film takes the audience behind the scenes as Elvis tours the US.
The now signature split-screen footage was edited by an up-and-coming Martin Scorsese and added a lot to the energy and electricity of the performances.
8. Loving You (1957)
The second of Elvis’ films saw him playing on-screen young talented performers making the big time. Elvis's first leading role was a soft portrayal of his life story so far. Elvis Presley was simply replaced by his on-screen persona, Deke Rivers.
Whilst critics were still lukewarm about Elvis’ acting abilities the public loved it. The title track Loving You sold over a million copies and the film itself grossed over $3.7 million in its first year.
Finally, the soundtrack included some big Elvis hits too, including Mean Woman Blues, Got A Lot O' Livin' To Do and Teddy Bear.
7. Elvis That’s The Way It Is (1970)
The first of the documentary films that Colonel Tom Parker had signed Elvis up for. Driven by greed and spiralling gambling debts Colonel Tom Parker had stumbled upon a format that was to prove financial and artistic sense for the King. This docufilm follows Elvis’ early Vegas shows in the summer of 1970.
Although the film was billed as a behind-the-scenes look at the King it was considerably more carefully curated than many fans had hoped. However, the loyal Elvis followers would only have to wait a couple more years until Elvis On Tour to get a more ‘real’ and naturalistic snapshot of the King in all his glory. Is this one of your favourite Elvis movies?
6. Flaming Star (1960)
A brave and controversial film in the genre. Flaming Star was originally scheduled to be a Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra film. However, the two Hollywood big shots decided they had bigger fish to fry.
Elvis took the lead role of Pacer Bruton, originally intended for Marlon Brando and Steve Forrest took the role intended for Sinatra. The film was to reach number 12 in the box office charts with director Don Siegal (Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz and The Shootist) inspiring one of the best Elvis performances of his career.
The film critics were somewhat more impressed by Presley’s performance. The critics thought his 2-year stint in the army had afforded him a maturity that his previous roles lacked. At last, it seemed that the King of Rock’n’roll’s movie career might well have legs.
5. Roustabout (1964)
By 1964, the Colonel and Elvis had the formulae down on what was to make a good Elvis movie. The plot needed to show a heroic Elvis saving the day with some pretty girls and a great soundtrack. Roustabout ticked the boxes. In addition, Hollywood heavyweight, Barbra Stanwyck provided a little more gravitas to the film than some lesser Elvis films.
In addition, the film produced the best-selling soundtrack of 1964 with songs including, Roustabout, Little Egypt and It’s a Wonderful World. Is this one of your favourite Elvis movies?
The entire album playtime for all 11 songs comes in at under 20 minutes. That didn’t matter to most Elvis fans particularly as he spent most of the movies clad head to toe in leather and riding a motorbike!
4. Blue Hawaii (1961)
Another top-grossing film for the King. Blue Hawaii was one of the top 10 grossing movies of 1961. The movie earned the King and Colonel Tom Parker a massive $5 million in receipts. The film is notable if nothing else for Elvis’ smash hit, Can’t Help Falling in Love.
Blue Hawaii’s director, Norman Taurog was to direct another 8 Presley films in the 1960s including GI Blues, Double Trouble and Speedway.
The soundtrack, featuring Can’t Help Falling in Love, Rock A Hula Baby and Blue Hawaii was another monster hit for the Presley machine. The record spent 71 weeks on the UK charts peaking at the number 1 position.
Sadly, the critics could only mock and shake their heads. Meanwhile, Elvis was simply taking care of business. Subsequently, writing the blueprint of every teen musical for the next 20 years.
3. Viva Las Vegas (1964)
Elvis plays motorcar racer, Lucky Jackson romping his way through a rabble-rousing musical with Ann Margaret on his arm in the Nevada sunshine. The film was to become a firm fan favourite. Elvis looked great, the songs were good and the on-screen chemistry between Elvis and Ann Margret was off the scale. So what’s not to like?
Whilst on the face of it, Viva Las Vegas could be viewed as just another Presley film. However, it is the sheer power and fun that drives the film sets it apart from the others. Viva Las Vegas is without pretension, which is a rare thing in the film world. Undoubtedly, one of the best of its kind. Is this one of your favourite Elvis movies?
The million-seller soundtrack featured some great Elvis covers including What’d I Say, The Lady Loves Me and Today, Tomorrow and Forever.
2. Jailhouse Rock (1957)
Singing, fighting, dancing and romancing were how the film was billed to the public. The third in Elvis’ long run there was still something very raw in Elvis’ acting. He was a fan of young method actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando and tried to emulate them against the studio's wishes. After all the studios didn’t want another Dean or Brando they wanted Elvis.
The soundtrack was another big hit, employing rock’n’roll royalty Leiber and Stoller to write some new material. Legend has it that they were locked in a room for four hours and produced, Baby I Don’t Care, Treat Me Nice and Jailhouse Rock. Not a bad afternoon’s work.
Without a doubt, the iconic dance sequence directed by Alex Romero (On the Town, An American in Paris and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) was the icing on the cake. It seemed that Elvis was going from strength to strength as an actor, critics commented,
One of Presley's few vehicles which really caught his raw, sexy energy and sneering charisma on film.
1. King Creole (1958)
The number one spot is the brilliant King Creole, based on Harold Robbin's novel A Stone for Danny Fisher. Firstly, the film had everything a good teen rebellion flick needed from pathos to juvenile delinquency the movie had it in spades. Presley playing the title role was inspirational and a role that James Dean would have sold his soul to play at the time.
Esteemed director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca, Mildred Pierce and Angels with Dirty Faces). Alongside a strong support cast, Walter Matthau, Carolyn Reed and Vic Morrow showed what Elvis could do when his films were properly chosen for him. If only his manager, Colonel Tom Parker could have seen beyond the ever-increasing dollar signs, Presley could well have had a career like Sinatra’s. Is this one of your favourite Elvis movies?
Above all, the soundtrack included such greats as the title track, King Creole, Trouble and Hard Headed Woman. A winner from start to finish.
Even so, most critics derided Elvis’s film career for his lack of maturity and adult themes. Guess what they weren’t for adults they were for teens. It was these teens that loved them no matter how banal and pointless they seemed.
So, there you have it our top 10 Elvis movies of all time. Did your favourite make the grade? Last but not least, don’t forget to see Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 masterpiece for more on the King, the Colonel and his roller-coaster life.
