“Yes – it appears we are seeing year-on-year increases in callouts of pest control companies to bed bug infestations.” Prof James Logan, Professor of Medical Entomology and Director of Arctech Innovation, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). (Science Media Centre)

Rentokil has seen a 65% increase in call-outs related to bed bugs. It seems that it's not just Paris Fashion Week that needs to up their game.

How Can I Tell If We Have Bed Bugs?

Identifying a bed bug infestation can be tricky, as these pests are small and adept at hiding. However, there are several signs you can look out for:

  • Bites: Small, red, itchy bumps are often the first sign of a bed bug infestation. The bites are most commonly found on arms, hands, and legs.
  • Musty Odors: Bed bugs release pheromones that can create an unusual, musty odor.
  • Physical Evidence: Look for brown or red blood spots on your mattress or sheets. These dark spots often indicate where a group of bugs is hiding together. You might also find bed bug shells or molted skins, and tiny white eggs.
  • Visual Confirmation: Inspect your mattress and bed carefully, particularly in the crevices. Using a flashlight can help you spot bed bugs or their eggs.

What Causes Bed Bugs UK?

In the UK, as in other parts of the world, bed bugs are typically caused by human activity.

Contrary to popular belief they are not attracted to dirt or decay but are drawn to warmth, carbon dioxide, and blood, making humans perfect hosts. Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers, often entering homes unnoticed through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items.

It is thought that climate change is a driving factor behind the global increase so it might be an issue we all have to learn to live with.

How Do People Get Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are usually transported from place to place as people travel.

- Never leave your clothes or bags on the floor or in dark spaces for long periods of time.

- Always zip up your bags.

- Hang clothes in wardrobes and avoid drawers if possible.

They can hide in your luggage, personal belongings, or even on you, and can quickly infest your home. Shared living spaces and places with a high turnover of people sleeping – like hotels or hostels – are particularly high-risk areas.

Although pets are not considered to be hosts for bed bugs they can certainly help transport the pests. So be ultra vigilant if your pets sleep in your bed or bedroom. So help protect your pets too.

What Can I Do to Get Rid of Bed Bugs?

As ever the Springchicken community has come together to let you know what works for them.

Eliminating bed bugs can be challenging as they can survive for months without feeding, and their eggs are resistant to many forms of treatment. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Contact a Professional: Because of the difficulty in eliminating bed bugs, it's advisable to contact a pest control professional.
  2. Clean Infested Areas: Regularly wash and heat-dry (60 degrees) your bed sheets, blankets, bedspreads, and any clothing that touches the floor. This can help kill bed bugs.
  3. Reduce Clutter: Reducing clutter in your home can eliminate hiding places for bed bugs.
  4. Seal Cracks and Crevices: Bed bugs can hide in tiny cracks and crevices. Sealing these areas can prevent them from hiding and laying eggs.
  5. Be mindful, when buying a new mattress or duvet consider Memory Foam or Latex as the density of the material is not conducive to bed bugs.

Remember, early detection is key to preventing a full-blown infestation.

Keep an eye out for the signs and act immediately if you suspect you may have bed bugs. Always report and contact a reputable pest control services organisation. The National Pest Technicians Association (NPTA) is a professional trade association that represents all sectors within the public health and pest control industry. Search members of the NPTA.
