One of the biggest skincare issues we face is dryness. At this time of year, it's also not so much the winter blues we're fighting, but the winter reds - that unhealthy flush to the face that is the result of harsh winds or too quick a transition from hot to cold.
Unfortunately this redness and dryness only gets worse as we get older, so what is the best skin cream for you?
With so many ads and options for skincare these days it’s hard to figure out what’s the best for you and your needs, and not just a pretty advertisement!
But we’ve asked our Spring Chickens what their tried and tested go-to moisturiser is to help battle dry skin – whether it is a family secret passed down through the generations or simply something you’ve stumbled upon, we’ve compiled a list of the best skin cream moisturisers.
Most are brands you’ve probably heard about – but we’ve also got a few surprises and new additions to the favourites!
Tried and Tested Skin Creams
Here are the top skin creams recommended by the Spring Chicken Facebook community. Whilst there are some names that everyone knows and loves there are some unexpected ones as well!
Aldi Lacura Q10 Night Cream 50ml £1.49
Perhaps one of the most unexpected recommendations from Spring Chickens was Aldi’s own brand Q10 Night Cream. Not only is the price point simply jaw-dropping but it seems to genuinely work!
Perhaps not one to replace your favourite but a good backup skin treatment to try, that’s for sure.

Aldi Lacure Q-10 Renew Day Cream 50ml £1.49
Not only do they have this great body moisturiser, but they also have amazing day and night creams. The Q-10 Renew Day and Night Creams can be bought together for under £10 an incredible price!

AldiQ10....perfect....and cheap.
One of the Springchickens pointed out another important plus point about Aldi’s skincare range, Aldi doesn’t test on animals either!
Aldi is brilliant and not tested on animals so bonus.
Vaseline Original 250ml £2.99
Is perhaps one of the most versatile skin creams on this list. With its sales rate at a jar a minute way back in 1875, this American-based petroleum jelly has been the secret in many people’s skincare regime!
Whilst it is now mostly used for dry lips, the brand has evolved with specific skincare products for certain concerns. You can use the classic Vaseline as a moisturiser for the skin!
Johnsons Baby Lotion - £2.50
Whilst Johnsons you’ve probably used Johnson’s products for your kids or even your grandchildren; don’t be afraid to use it for yourself! Many Spring chickens revealed that they loved using this moisturiser and we completely understand why!
It is hypoallergenic, gentle, and incredibly priced for the amount of product you get! It’s a no-brainer if you want an affordable moisturiser that will work – although I must admit I don’t think it will give you baby skin again!

Nivea seems like a moisturiser that has been around forever – and it feels like that because it almost has been well regarding skin cream it is a pillar as it’s been around for 111 years!
Nivea can’t beat it! Had the expensive creams but always go back to Nivea.
Always used Nivea!
There are so many options when it comes to Nivea moisturising products, but the most well-known ones are the blue and white tub moisturisers.
Aveeno Moisturising Creamy Oil 300ml £7.99
Aveeno is based on the benefits of oats and oat extracts which makes it an incredibly nourishing and gentle cream good for any skin type but especially those with drier skin.
This is a great moisturiser, normally you only get 100ml for £5.00 unlike other moisturisers in this list where you get 400ml to 500ml for similar price points. With such great and effective moisturisers this might be a good way to differentiate between the products.
However, compared to other moisturisers out there this is a steal!
After years of spending so much money on expensive face creams I now only use Aveeno
E45 Moisturising Lotion 400ml - £5.99
Traditionally only available in hospitals, E45 has since made its way into mainstream skincare shops. This is a great moisturiser not only for dry skin but if you also suffer from eczema.
Packed full of moisturising ingredients this moisturiser is light, versatile, and can be used daily without getting your skin oily!

Olay Beauty Fluid Face And Body Moisturiser 200ml - £5.99
Olay has been around for 70 years! There are now so many options from Olay but the most long-running one is Olay Beauty Fluid Moisturizer.
It truly is a moisturiser for the generations! Not only are its moisturisers full of rich ingredients but the packaging makes it feel like a luxury skincare brand –showing that you don’t need to break the bank to have moisturised skin.
Mam used it, and granny used it
In 1999 just before the end of the century, the brand decided to unify by renaming the brand from ‘Oil of Ulan’ to ‘Olay’ worldwide
Oil of Ulay (and yes I know they have called it Oil of Olay for the past 20 years!
Whilst Olay is an incredibly great moisturiser do not be fooled it won’t erase all wrinkles! But don’t worry a few wrinkles show that you have enjoyed life!!
Olay is the one for me, I’ve been using it since it was called ulay unfortunately after a conversation with my 6-year-old great granddaughter she informed me it's notworking as I still have wrinkles

The iconic blue Astral cream has been a simple yet effective moisturiser there to help everybody have moisturised and hydrated skin!
Although it must be added it is heavily scented, but if that doesn’t bother you then it’s a great reliable moisturiser.
I've used Astral cream for about 60 years
Some Spring Chickens have reported difficulty in finding this time-tested skin cream and whilst some retailers have forgotten it – its simple recipe for hydration has not been forgotten. And you can easily find it on Amazon.
Simple Age Resisting Day and Night Cream - £11.38
This brand is surprisingly 62 years old and has an array of affordable skin care products which are suitable for sensitive skin conditions – so try with confidence!
Now, this day and night skin cream is as simple as its name suggests! It is scentless, moisturising, and lightweight. As well as effective.
Simple day and night skin creams might be the perfect point between affordable and effective. Both skin creams are 50 ml, so not that much product but at under £6.00 for each of these, it still seems a great deal.
L’Oréal Age Perfect Day and Night Cream - £24.00
L’Oréal is a French cosmetic company and is the biggest cosmetic company worldwide.
It has a full range of products for every skincare issue but one of its most popular lines of the brand is its anti-aging revitalising skincare line.
The Age Perfect Day and Night Cream are full of peptides to help with ‘anti-sagging’ and ‘anti-age spots’ whilst also making sure that your skin is hydrated throughout the day and night without leaving oily skin!
Both skin creams come in 50ml, which is a reasonable price considering the number of votes it gets from the Spring Chicken community.
No7 Protect and Perfect Day Cream - £22.45
No 7 is Boots own brand, their full range has managed to establish itself right up there with the big boys in the skin cream world. But do they work?
According to the Springchicken community, No 7 Protect and Perfect Day and Night Cream, is perhaps one of the brands' most well-known products with its anti-aging properties working for most people.
Now we're not saying this is a miracle elixir that will grant you eternal youth! However, it most definitely does reduce your skin's aging to some degree and many Springchickens swear by it.
Unlike the other moisturising creams on the list, the day and night cream together retail for over £40 which is a much bigger investment for 50mls. As many Spring Chickens will testify you can’t put a price on youth.

Liz Earle Skin Repair Light Cream - £24.00
Whilst it is seemingly cheaper than the two previous recommendations its position on the list is just for the Liz Earle day moisturising cream.
But the price point reflects how great the product is!
Liz Earle is an award-winning beauty brand with hundreds of products.
This moisturiser is a great splurge for those who suffer from dry skin – it will help keep your skin hydrated and soft without it looking oily! Plus, Liz Earle is completely cruelty free which is a bonus.
Despite the price point, it is a great moisturiser and once you find the moisturiser which works for you, you tend to stick to it – why fix something that’s not broken?

Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream - £87.00
The most expensive cream on this list, which therefore warrants the title of luxury skincare.
This cream firms smoothes and hydrates the skin plus it has SPF 30 in it which means it also protects from UVA and UVB rays.
Although it should be mentioned that moisturisers which have SPF in them are never as effective as a normal sunscreen and might not be protecting you as much as you need – with this price point it is definitely something to be aware of!
With only 50ml of product given, there are cheaper alternatives however this luxury moisturiser does feel fabulous, so if you have the money why not treat yourself?
