When that comes to your bladders, there’s never a truer word spoken. Some foods and drinks are known to irritate the bladder, leading to potential leaks, but by making wise choices about what you eat, and reducing your intake of potential irritants, you can reduce many of the symptoms of OAB. 

In fact, research indicates that nearly 50% of people aged 60 and older who drank about three cups of coffee daily showed signs of an overactive bladder. In 2016, a study in ‘Current Urology' found that this rate was higher compared to those who consumed less caffeine. Additionally, carbonated beverages, chocolate, citrus fruits, tomatoes, tomato-derived products and sauces (ie. ketchup, passata), and artificial sweeteners can trigger symptoms.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you need to drink less to avoid the loo trips. It might seem counterintuitive at first, but this can cause dehydration, and lead to concentrated urine which might irritate the bladder lining and cause UTIs. Aim to drink 8 glasses of water a day - sipping frequently rather than gulps! 

2. Adopting the Right Peeing Etiquettes

It’s not something we often think about, but believe it or not, the way you pee matters! By learning how to urinate properly, you have a better chance of fully emptying your bladder, reducing the urgency and frequency of bathroom breaks. 

When you need to pee, ensure you're adopting the right posture;

- Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the ground.

- Lean slightly forward, and rest your elbows on your upper thighs, leaning slightly forward.

This posture allows your pelvic floor muscles to relax and let your bladder fully empty itself. Squatting over the toilet seat can stop your bladder from emptying completely and cause unnecessary strain on your pelvic floor. Yes, public restrooms may not be the cleanest, but it’s better to cover the seat with some toilet paper than to risk damaging your pelvic floor.

If you are tempted to go for a ‘just in case’ wee, it might be time to stop. When we go to the loo too frequently, that can train our bladder to feel the urge more often than necessary.

4. Do your pelvic floor exercises!
