How much sunscreen should you use?
A great method to use in applying sunscreen to ensure you wear enough is to ensure you use the ‘two-finger method’. You measure sunscreen by using the length of your pointer and middle finger then using that product to apply on your face (don’t forget your ears as well!)

You should reapply every two hours, but more often if you have been swimming or sweating heavily. In the morning it’s recommended to apply your sunscreen 20-30 minutes before you go outside for the best protection against UV rays.
Do sunscreens go out of date?
Yes! Usually sunscreens, once opened, have a shelf life of 6 to 12 months. Which means don’t be relying on your sunscreen from last year’s holiday.
What does SPF mean?
SPF is the acronym for Sun Protection Factor. Usually, this is very clearly labelled on the product. Most of the recommended sunscreens in the article areSPF’s 30 or 50. This is because the higher the SPF rating the greater protection they provide. SPF 30 protects you from 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50protects you from 98% of UVB rays. There is little reason to go higher than a sunscreen which is higher than SPF 50 as the increased protection is incredibly marginal.
Does anything other than sunscreen protect me from the sun?
No! Sunscreen is the most effective way to protect your skin from sun damage. Despite what some people might think using any type of oil or alternative does not protect the skin from sun damage. Olive oil, coconut oil or baby oil WILL NOT protect you from skin cancers regardless of what skin type you are.
What to do if you do get sunburnt?
Firstly, you should have a cool shower.
Make sure to drink lots of water as well to keep yourself hydrated. To help soothe the sunburn you should use your preferred after-sun lotion, this is used to moisturise the affected area to rehydrate the skin.
If you are in a pinch and don’t have any after-sun to hand you can use your regular moisturiser – although it might not work as well. The NHS offer some great advice if you feel you need some help!
