How do I give up smoking?
I’ve smoked 25 cigarettes a day for the last 50 years. I’m 70 next year and determined to stop. What’s the most surefire way?
Well done for making the decision to quit.
Generally speaking a person is more likely to successfully give up smoking when they receive professional support from a stop-smoking adviser. This is a free service that the NHS provides. The NHS Stop Smoking Service also offers great advice about the different ways to quit and about medication and nicotine replacement therapy that can help.
Setting a quit date, preparing how to deal with withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and planning how to avoid finding yourself in situations where you might light-up is very important. Also, no single approach works for everyone, which is why it’s important to decide on one that can work for you.
